YOUGHAL – A HISTORICAL & HERITAGE TOWN
A renowned family centre with miles of blue flag beaches and a celebrated past reflected in its historic buildings...Youghal, a scenic walled port with an undiscovered past, is situated at the mouth of the majestic river Blackwater. It is a region steeped in history, for it was here that Canon Law was first inscribed.

Youghal derives its name from the Gaelic word ‘Eochaill’ meaning ‘yew wood’. Pronounced ‘Yawl’, this haven was the foremost port in the South of Ireland for many years and abounds with many historic and architectural gems. The original walls of the old town are still intact, while the Clock Gate, which dates from the 1777, spans the main street. St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, an 11th Century jewel, nestles within the security of these fortifications. It is site to the Boyle tomb, which contains the remains of Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork, and of international interest.

Sir Walter Raleigh is probably the most famous citizen of Youghal, responsible for bringing two things to Ireland – potatoes and tobacco. The latter has since been banned in pubs! The 1950’s saw the making of the classic film ‘Moby Dick’ in Youghal.
As you will find everywhere in East Cork, the surrounding countryside presents a voyage of discovery. Take the costal road from Youghal and encounter Ballymacoda – a Gaelic speaking village close to Knockadoon Head.
Family holidays have always been a Youghal tradition and its “Blue Flag” beach and numerous indoor attractions provide for a variety of activities and entertainment – no matter what the weather. Youghal presents a great mixture of old and new. This startling town boasts an array of activities and attractions unsurpassed anywhere in Ireland.
